Former TV man, wife sentenced to three years in home confinement

July 20, BPN. A Minsk court has sentenced a former state television employee and his wife to three years of restricted freedom, a type of home confinement, for taking part in protests against the authoritarian regime.

Źmicier Bajarovič, a photographer and writer and a former STV employee, and Valeryja Bajarovič were convicted of public order offenses, according to STV.

Diplomats from several European countries showed support for the couple outside the courthouse.

The European Union condemned the persecution of Belarusians “for expressing dissent against violence and injustice.” Minsk continues its crackdown on journalists and activists since a disputed presidential election in 2020.

The Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) says 36 media workers are in prison.
