German foreign ministry says Łukašenka scared of democracy
February 26, Pozirk. The German foreign ministry has condemned the “systemic repression surrounding the elections in Belarus” in a statement posted on X.
“The [Alaksandar] Łukašenka regime employs all available means to suppress the democratic aspirations of the people of Belarus. It has witnessed their strength [in 2020] – and this strength continues to scare the regime,” it reads.
In 2023, authorities denied re-registration to all democratic parties. They also banned opposition candidates from running in the parliamentary and local elections that took place last week amid mass-scale reprisals.
The central election commission reported that 41.71 percent of registered voters cast ballots during the early voting, with overall voter turnout at 73 percent, the lowest after the 2000 election.
