Leaders of Belarus’ two exiled governments meet in Canada

April 15, Pozirk. The leaders of two Belarusian governments in exile, one dating back to 1918 and the other to 2020, met in Canada on April 14.
“I began my visit to Canada by having a warm meeting with @radabnr President [of the Belarusian National Republic (BNR)] Ivonka Survilla. We discussed the situation within #Belarus & the need to strengthen our identity, language & culture. We agreed to hold regular meetings between the Council of the Rada & @CabinetBelarus,” Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja said on X.
The BNR Rada is associated with Belarus’ oldest government that declared BNR independence on March 25, 1918.
Cichanoŭskaja is associated with the modern Belarusian generation’s aspirations for democracy in Belarus, which gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
While in Canada, the Belarusian opposition leader is scheduled to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Foreign Minister Malanie Joly and the speakers of both parliamentary chambers.
She said before the trip that she was expecting Canada to take leadership in the global fight for freedom and democracy and expressed hope for Canada’s support for Belarusian civil society.
In 2022, Canada imposed sanctions on Minsk for its support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
