Belarusian specialists involved in Hungarian nuclear project – envoy
May 13, Pozirk. Belarusian Ambassador to Hungary Uładzimir Ułachovič told the ONT television channel yesterday that Belarusians have been involved in the Paks II nuclear power plant project for years.
Although relations between Belarus and the European Union hit the rock bottom amid disagreements over human rights and the war in Ukraine, Hungary has treated Belarus more leniently than the other EU members.
The commissioning of the Paks II plant would allow Hungary to save 3.5bn m3 of natural gas annually, Ułachovič said.
He added that Belarus and Hungary could cooperate in sectors unaffected by international sanctions, such as agriculture.
Hungarian companies have been working in Belarus for about 20 years, he said. “Issues related to both industry and the IT sector” remain on the agenda.
Last July, Ułachovič said that Belarus was looking forward to participating in Hungary’s nuclear project. According to him, Hungary had demand for builders and engineers from Belarus, “but only the work of an expert group is real so far.”
On March 25, the Belarusian energy ministry reported that its head Viktar Karankievič met with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who “pointed out that the project to build the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant was implemented with high quality and expressed Hungary’s interest in acquiring our country’s expertise and competence.”
The terms of bilateral cooperation are being worked out by a “joint working group on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy,” the ministry said.
