Polish producers concerned about fertilizer imports from Belarus, Russia

August 8, Pozirk. Polish fertilizer producers may be priced out of the market because of growing imports from Belarus and Russia, delegates from the Polish Chamber of Chemical Industry warned at a meeting with agriculture officials yesterday.
In its press release, the ministry has not specified how fertilizers, which are under European Union sanctions, enter the Polish market.
Producers urged the ministry to introduce regulations to limit imports.
However, farmers also complained about a sharp rise in fertilizer prices and shortages of Polish fertilizers.
According to the agriculture ministry, imports accounted for 56 percent in the 2022-2023 season, a two-fold increase from the previous season’s market share.
Minister Czesław Siekierski said the ministry will draft amendments to the law governing fertilizers, but the sector is overseen by many agencies.
Siekierski suggested holding another meeting, with officials from other Polish ministries participating.
Biełaruśkalij, Belarus’ state-owned potash giant, has been under EU sanctions since 2022. The EU has also sanctioned Hrodna Azot, a Belarusian state-owned nitrogen fertilizer producer.
