Court rejects complaint against detention of Viktar Babaryka’s son
August 25, BPN. A district court in Minsk has rejected Eduard Babaryka’s complaint against extending his detention in a KGB jail until September 14.
The decision was made by Judge Michaił Makarevič.
“Eduard holds the record for the longest detention pending preliminary investigation. He has been in jail for more than 26 months. The case still has not been referred to court,” said the press office of his father, former banker and presidential hopeful Viktar Babaryka.
Eduard Babaryka, who managed his father’s campaign headquarters, was arrested on June 18, 2020 and accused of large-scale tax evasion. After 18 months, when the maximum term of detention during the preliminary investigation had expired and he was supposed to be freed, he was charged with inciting hatred and organizing mass riots. The ex-banker’s son may face up to 15 years in prison, if convicted.
Viktar Babaryka was accused of bribery and sentenced to 14 years in prison in a case widely seen as Alaksandr Łukašenka’s revenge for challenging him in the presidential election.
