Arrested protester’s daughter held in shelter over two weeks – rights group

September 4, BPN. The daughter of ceramics master Natalla Karniejeva remains in a shelter, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.

Three people close to Karniejeva have applied for guardianship over 10-year-old Bahdana, but none of them meet the criteria to win full custody of her.

The girl is in a social pedagogy center’s shelter in Minsk.

On September 3, media reported that Karniejeva’s husband, who had been detained with her, was freed. At the same time, according to Viasna, “this will not change the situation, since Bahdana is not his daughter.”

Karniejeva was arrested on August 19. She is charged with participating in the 2020 protests.

On September 1, she was recognized as a political prisoner by the human rights community.
