Transition cabinet’s “extremist group” label proves Łukašenka’s fears of opposition – Cichanoŭskaja

September 10, BPN. The “extremist group” label recently attached to the opposition’s transition cabinet exposes fears of the Alaksandr Łukašenka’s regime, said Belarusian democratic leader Sviatłana Cichanoŭskaja.

“It is not surprising for us – we know that they are afraid of our democratic forces. The Cabinet represents the interests of our people – Łukašenka only represents himself,” the politician wrote on Twitter.

On August 30, the Committee for the State Security (KGB) branded “the leaders, founders, and participants of the initiative Joint Transition Cabinet” an extremist group and added a corresponding entry on its list of extremist organizations on September 5.

Cichanoŭskaja announced the creation of the opposition’s transition cabinet at a conference in Vilnius on August 9.

It includes Pavieł Łatuška, in charge of power transition; Alaksandar Azaraŭ from the BYPOL association of former security forces as a representative for the restoration of law and order; Valer Kavaleŭski, currently head of Cichanoŭskaja’s apparatus, responsible for foreign affairs; Lieutenant Colonel Valer Sachaščyk, in charge of defense and national security, and Taćciana Zareckaja, in charge of finance and economy.

According to Cichanoŭskaja, the goals of the Transition Cabinet include “protecting Belarus’ independence and sovereignty, representing national interests and working toward the country’s actual de-occupation.”
