EU spokesman calls Łukašenka cause of all Belarusian problems

September 17, BPN. EU spokesman Peter Stano has called Alaksandr Łukašenka the cause of all Belarusian problems.

“He is the source and cause of all the problems that Belarus faces today. But, of course, because he is a problem, he is also part of the solution. Therefore, he is chiefly the one who should make the decision to hold new independent elections. He is the one who should make it possible to start a meaningful and inclusive nation-wide dialogue,” he said in an interview with DW, published on September 16.

The EU has never stopped its dialogue with Belarusian officials, although it does not consider Łukašenka a legitimate president, Stano said. To change the quality of this dialogue, the state must stop violating human rights and organize new, fair elections, he added.
