Belarus to stay on EU agenda, von der Leyen assures Cichanoŭskaja
September 22, BPN. Belarusian opposition leader Sviatłana Cichanoŭskaja discussed sanctions against Alaksandr Łukašenka’s regime during her meeting with the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York on September 21.
“We are proud to have the EU as our ally in the fight for freedom and independence. I was assured that Belarus will stay on the agenda,” the politician said on Twitter.
Valer Kavaleŭski, responsible for foreign affairs in opposition’s transition cabinet, described the meeting as warm and fruitful. “Belarusians are working hard to resolve internal crisis and protect independence against hostile Russia. EU’s further involvement in both tasks is crucial,” he tweeted.
Von der Leyen tweeted that the EU stood by the “Belarusian people for a democratic Belarus and free and fair elections.” She added that it had allocated 100 million euros to support Belarusians since 2020.
