Minsk hopes to join SCO in a year

September 23, BPN. Belarus seeks to become a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in a year at the next summit in India, said Alaksandr Łukašenka during his visit to the Chatyn memorial complex on September 23.

He noted that all SCO member states, except for its founding members – China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan – went through a certain admission procedure. The SCO is now “turning from a regional organization into a global one,” Łukašenka’s press office quoted him as saying.

Currently, Belarus has observer status in the SCO, a Eurasian regional
organization established back in 2001 and comprising China, India, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
