Cichanoŭskaja, senior US diplomat discuss support for repression victims, civil society
September 23, BPN. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja and US Under Secretary of State Uzra Zeya have met on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly.
The former presidential hopeful has emphasized that it is important to keep Belarus in the international spotlight, including at the UN, her press office reported.
“Cichanoŭskaja told Zeya about the difficult situation in Belarusian prisons and the escalation in reprisals,” it said. “The under secretary is well aware of the situation with political prisoners and has expressed support for them and their families.”
Cichanoŭskaja said all the political prisoners should be unconditionally released. She added that it was important to help victims of repression and members of civil society.
Cichanoŭskaja and Zeya discussed “further steps to bring Łukašenka to justice for crimes against Belarusians and for drawing our country into the war against Ukraine,” the office said.
