Belarusian, Hungarian foreign ministers discuss “mutually beneficial” relationship

January 11, BPN. Belarusian Foreign Minister Siarhiej Alejnik and Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó had a telephone conversation on January 11.

Szijjártó congratulated Alejnik on his appointment, the Belarusian foreign ministry reported.

“In the course of the conversation they discussed relevant areas of bilateral cooperation, the implementation of previous agreements and the prospects for further interaction,” it said. “They exchanged views on the regional situation. Both sides confirmed the focus on further mutually beneficial development of interstate relations and agreed to continue the dialogue.”

Szijjártó wrote on Facebook that cooperation continues in economic areas not affected by sanctions, mainly in pharmaceuticals and agriculture.

He asked Belarusian diplomats to help Hungarian truck drivers stuck on Belarus’ western border, without elaborating on what he meant.

According to Szijjártó, he conveyed to Alejnik that the war in Ukraine brings great damage and problems to Hungary in terms of economy, energy and security, so Hungary wants peace as soon as possible.

Szijjártó said that he was very touched by the death of former Belarusian Foreign Minister Uładzimir Makiej on November 26.

Alejnik, a former first deputy foreign minister, was appointed to the top diplomatic post on December 13.

Hungary remains the only EU country to maintain contacts with Minsk after the 2020 presidential election marred by allegations of massive fraud.
