November 18, Pozirk. Belarus and Latvia share common history and values, Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja said in her congratulatory message on Latvia’s Independence Day.

“I am eternally grateful to Latvia for supporting us as we move towards freedom and democracy in Belarus,” she said on X. “We will never forget how Latvia became the second country after Lithuania to impose sanctions on the [Alaksandar] Łukašenka regime.”

The politician also noted Latvia’s support to Belarusians fleeing politically-motivated persecution at home as well as assistance to political prisoners, civil society, human rights defenders and independent media outlets.

“Let us continue to stand together for the values we hold dear and may our friendship only grow stronger with time,” she stressed.
