Number of political prisoners hits a new high of 1,311

August 26, BPN. Belarusian human rights defenders have declared five more people as political prisoners, taking their total number to 1,311, the Viasna Human Rights Center said in a statement.

Kanstancin Jermałovič and Vital Minkievič were sentenced to 16 and 15 years in prison, respectively, on charges of establishing a terrorist organization, committing an act of terrorism, and insulting Alaksandr Łukašenka. Ihar Kazloŭ got 14 years in prison on the same charge.

Pavieł Nikicienka was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for mass riots, gross violations of public order, inciting hatred, and unlawful acts in relation to private life. Siarhiej Kirykovič got the same prison term for violence or threat of violence against a public official, insulting Łukašenka and inciting hatred.

The statement signed by Viasna and Pravavaja Inicyjatyva stresses that the convicts were frustrated by the authorities’ failure to respect the law and protect citizens’ rights.” It points to “the lack of fair trial and conditions for a democratic change of power through elections.”

The real number of political prisoners is considerably higher because many victims are unable or unwilling to report their cases to human rights organizations.
