Lithuanian premier meets with Belarus’ opposition leader
August 30, BPN. Lithuania’s Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė visited the Office of Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Cichanoŭskaja in Vilnius on August 29, assuring her of Lithuania’s continued support for Belarusian opposition, civil society, and independent media.
Cichanoŭskaja and Šimonytė discussed the role of Alaksandr Łukašenka’s regime in the Russian war against Ukraine as well as support for Belarusians who were forced to flee their country for fear of political persecution, Delfi reported, citing Lithuanian prime minister’s press office.
“Lithuania’s support to democratic Belarus and all its people fleeing repressions is steadfast,” Šimonytė tweeted.
Šimonytė also promised that Lithuania will continue to promote the cause of Belarus’ freedom on the international agenda and called for an end to political persecution and for free democratic elections.
