Only four bills sponsored by Belarusian MPs in 2021 – researcher

September 1, BPN. Lawmaking is not a priority for Belarusian MPs, Belarusian researcher Taćciana Čulickaja told an online event on September 1.

The academic director of the School of Young Managers in Public Administration (SYMPA) said only four bills were tabled by MPs in 2021, three of which were “linked to tighter authoritarian practices and restrictions on political and civil liberties.”

At the same time, deputies actively back the initiatives that come from the country’s leadership, she noted.

According to Čulickaja, MPs’ foreign contacts are mostly in Russia, although they are trying to use the OSCE as the last available platform in the West.

This way, the Belarusian parliament remains a body with limited functions and powers, she concluded.
