September 7, BPN. The Latvian government on September 6 proposed amendments to the immigration law that would make it more difficult for Russians and Belarusians to obtain temporary residence permits.
In particular, the renewal of residence permits may be suspended until June 30, 2023.
However, there would be exceptions, for example, foreign students wishing to stay in Latvia after graduation.
In addition, the law may require some 22,300 foreigners to confirm their knowledge of the Latvian language.
Media note that the amendments have yet to be approved by the parliament.
