Estonian foreign minister: Sanctions on Łukašenka regime must be strengthened

September 21, BPN. Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said sanctions against Alaksandr Łukašenka’s regime must be strengthened, broadcaster ERR reported on September 20.

The Belarusian authorities are complicit with Russia in its war against Ukraine, he said after meeting Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja in New York.

“This is why we must ramp up sanctions against the regime, continue isolating them internationally and ensure legal accountability because the Łukašenka regime should not feel it has impunity,” he added.

At the same time, Reinsalu noted the courage and persistence of the Belarusians defending their future and supporting Ukraine.

Earlier this year, the Estonian authorities decided not to send a new ambassador to Belarus. They also restricted the issuance of work permits to Belarusian and Russian nationals.
