Belarusian foreign minister unhappy about UN

September 21, BPN. Belarusian Foreign Minister Uładzimir Makiej has suggested that the UN should be reformed.

“We are particularly disappointed that many developing countries have been under increased pressure on their sovereignty at the UN in recent years,” he said in a letter to UN foreign ministers.

Economic sanctions adopted without a Security Council mandate clearly violate the UN Charter, he said.

Makiej said the organization has ceased to be a neutral platform ensuring international cooperation between equals.

“Perhaps, the UN should limit itself to issues that have a clear cross-border aspect?” he asked.

At the same time, he praised the Security Council as a “fairly effective format.”
